Knicks Hire Mark Bryant as ‘Big Man Coach’
After failing to secure a veteran center, the New York Knicks have hired Mark Bryant to develop their in-house talent. Ian Begley of SNY tweeted that Bryant is joining Tom Thibodeau’s coaching staff.
Bryant, a highly respected NBA assistant coach, specializes in developing big men. Last season, he was part of the Detroit Pistons’ coaching staff under head coach Monty Williams. The Knicks’ previous big man coach, Kenny Payne, is now the associate head coach at the University of Arkansas.
Bryant brings extensive experience, having served as an assistant coach for several NBA teams over the past two decades. His coaching history includes stints with the Phoenix Suns (2019-2023), Oklahoma City Thunder (2007-2019), Orlando Magic (2005-2007), and Dallas Mavericks (2004-2005).
Before his coaching career, Bryant had a 15-year NBA playing career. Drafted 21st overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1988, he played for 10 different NBA teams, including appearances in the 1990 and 1992 NBA Finals with the Blazers.
Born on April 25, 1965, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Bryant played college basketball at Seton Hall University before entering the NBA. His blend of playing and coaching experience makes him a valuable addition to Thibodeau’s staff.
The Knicks are set to start the season with Mitchell Robinson as their starting center and Jericho Sims as his primary backup. Reports indicated that New York explored adding another veteran center this summer but have not signed one, nor have they re-signed Precious Achiuwa, who filled in as a small-ball center last season.
At training camp, rookie Ariel Hukporti and Dmytro Skapintsev, who played for New York in the NBA Summer League, will also compete for roster spots. Sims, needing further development, and at least one other raw big man on the roster could benefit from Bryant’s expertise. This appears to be another strategic hire by the Knicks’ front office.
