Dylan Holloway is still on the roster and will likely “play his way up the line-up this season,” according to Bob Stauffer, even though the Edmonton Oilers signed Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner and kept Adam Henrique during this offseason’s free-agent frenzy.
The Edmonton Oilers During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Dylan Holloway played a big role in EDM’s top 9 FWDS and answered with 5 goals.
Though Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson have been added, I have a sneaking sense that Holloway will work his way up the lineup this season.
In 2023–24, Holloway enjoyed a bit of a breakout season with the Oilers. Despite not being able to play in the NHL full-time due to injury, he did solidify his spot on the squad towards the end of the regular season and proved to be a valuable asset as the Oilers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final and reached Game 7. In 36 regular season games, Holloway scored six goals; in 25 postseason games, he scored five more. He possesses talent, speed, and determination, and the Oilers have been patient in helping him develop into a valuable member of their team.
It remains to be seen if he can place himself among the team’s top six. With Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Jeff Skinner now almost guaranteed berths, the Oilers forward group is tremendously loaded. To play alongside the team’s best players, Holloway will have to defeat Arvidsson and Evander Kane.
Since Holloway is an RFA at the moment, a deal between the two parties is necessary for him to remain on the roster. Although there has been discussion of an offer sheet, it seems doubtful that one will materialize because a team would need to pay a significant premium to acquire the player from the Oilers.
It’s thought that the salary cap plus the fact that the player and management have kind of parted ways this offseason will be the main serious delays in reaching a fair agreement between the two parties.
