Report: Bears Signing Former All-Pro Safety Kevin Byard
The Chicago Bears are set to sign former Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard to a two-year, $15 million deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Byard confirmed the news on social media shortly after the report.
The Eagles released Byard on March 1, making him eligible to sign before the official start of free agency.
Byard, 30, has played eight NFL seasons since being drafted by the Titans in the third round of the 2016 draft. He spent over seven seasons with the Titans, earning All-Pro honors in 2017 and 2021.
The Titans traded Byard to the Eagles in October before Week 8 last season during a roster overhaul. Byard played 10 games for the Eagles before being released in a cost-cutting move, saving the Eagles $13 million in cap space for next season.
Last season, Byard recorded 122 tackles, three passes defended, and one interception between his time with the Titans and Eagles. He made 75 of those tackles in his 10 games with Philadelphia. Despite his efforts, the Eagles’ defense struggled, culminating in a 32-9 loss in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Byard is expected to start in Chicago, providing a significant upgrade to the Bears’ secondary. The Bears, with over $60 million in cap space, are looking to strengthen both sides of the ball and had a need at safety after releasing veteran Eddie Jackson.
