Quarterback Adrian Martinez is getting an NFL opportunity after winning the United Football League Most Valuable Player Award and assisting the Birmingham Stallions in capturing the UFL championship this season.
Martinez’s signing was revealed by the New York Jets on Saturday. Terms weren’t made clear.
Along with 13-year veteran Tyrod Taylor, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, and undrafted rookie Andrew Peasley from Wyoming, Martinez becomes the fourth quarterback on the New York roster.
Jordan Travis, a fifth-round draft pick, was placed on the non-football injury list to begin training camp. The former Florida State quarterback is on the mend after an ankle injury he suffered on November 18 during a 58-13 victory over North Alabama.
Thursday saw the signing of undrafted rookie Ben Bryant by New York with Travis on NFI; however, the Jets cut the former Northwestern quarterback after acquiring Martinez.
With 528 yards and three touchdowns on 54 carries, Martinez led the UFL in rushing while the Stallions had the best regular-season record (9-1). During the regular season, Martinez also completed 134 of 229 passes for 1,749 yards, 15 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Before the Stallions decided on Martinez, former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral started two of Birmingham’s first three games. Martinez and Corral shared playing time.
