Latest Rangers News: Texas Rangers Announced The Late Signing Of Another Top Star Before Deadline

The Texas Rangers have acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin from the Detroit Tigers as the MLB trade deadline approaches. In exchange, the Rangers have sent right-handed pitching prospects Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee to the Tigers.

Chafin, 34, joins the reigning World Series champions as they aim for a playoff spot. Despite currently being three games under .500, the Rangers are only 3.5 games behind the American League West leaders.

This season, Chafin has posted a 3.16 ERA in 41 relief appearances for the Tigers, with a 3-2 record and one save out of four opportunities. He has struck out 50 batters and walked 16 in 37 innings.

Over his 11-year MLB career with five teams, Chafin has a 3.39 ERA, a 20-26 record, and 20 saves, accumulating 535 strikeouts in 489 innings.

Montalvo, 22, has a 4-2 record with a 2.44 ERA in 13 starts at the High-A level this season. Lee, 25, has primarily played at Triple-A Round Rock over the past three years and is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 11 games (one start) across two levels this year.

To make space for Chafin on the 40-man roster, the Rangers have designated right-hander Jonathan Hernandez, 28, for assignment. Hernandez has a 3-1 record with a 5.05 ERA, 26 walks, and 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over 26 games (one start) for Texas this season.
