Official Braves News: Huge Boost Brian Snitker Confirm The Signing Of Another Top Star To Bolster Squad Depth

Atlanta Braves President and General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is hopeful that Jorge Soler will provide the boost the team needs, despite the club being less active at the MLB Trade Deadline than some expected. The Braves acquired Soler to address a significant gap in their lineup. Although questions remain about his defensive capabilities and his fit beyond 2024, Soler is expected to strengthen Atlanta’s offense. He currently has a 115 wRC+ after a slow start with the Giants but has posted a 146 wRC+ since June 1. Soler is projected to play right field, though he hasn’t played defensively this season and has been used exclusively as a designated hitter. He’s under contract for two more years.

Anthopoulos noted the need for depth in the outfield, especially with Ronald Acuña Jr. recovering from a torn ACL and Michael Harris II dealing with a hamstring strain. Harris is expected to return by mid-August, and Acuña’s projected return is around Opening Day 2025, depending on his rehab progress. Soler’s addition provides valuable coverage.

The Braves had previously acquired closer Carlos Estevez and had been exploring further moves, including adding a left-handed bat to support their bullpen. With the trade of left-handed reliever Gregory Soto to the Orioles, Soler’s acquisition makes strategic sense. He offers a better performance against left-handed hitters and provides multi-inning relief options.

Anthopoulos revealed that the Braves considered various options before the deadline, including adding an infielder. With Ozzie Albies sidelined due to a broken wrist and struggling performance from Nacho Alvarez Jr., the team looked into potential replacements. Albies is expected back by early September, which influenced their decision-making process. Veteran infielder Whit Merrifield, currently recovering from a finger injury, could also play a role.

Despite recent injuries, including concerns about starters Max Fried and Reynaldo López, the Braves have maintained a competitive edge. Anthopoulos explored acquiring a top-tier starter but didn’t finalize a deal. Fried is eligible to return soon, and López is expected to pitch shortly. The Braves remain confident in their rotation and overall team performance, believing in their potential to advance in the playoffs.

Anthopoulos emphasized that despite the challenges and injuries, the Braves are committed to making the playoffs and are confident in their ability to compete once there. He pointed to recent postseason successes of lower-seeded teams as evidence that anything can happen in the playoffs.
