Three-star defensive lineman Darrion Smith has committed to Tennessee, further boosting the Volunteers’ 2025 recruiting class. Smith, a standout from Maryland, chose Tennessee over offers from Ohio State and his home state school, Maryland. Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 265 pounds, Smith is currently ranked as the 650th prospect nationally and the 18th from Maryland, according to 247Sports.
Despite his lower ranking, Smith’s offer list is impressive, including schools like Oklahoma, Michigan, Ole Miss, LSU, USC, and Miami. It’s anticipated that his ranking may improve significantly by the time signing day arrives.
Tennessee secured Smith’s commitment after hosting him during their ‘Big Orange Kickoff’ event last weekend. He is the third commitment from that event, joining four-star tight end Da’Saahn Brame and four-star safety Lagonza Hayward.
On the field, Smith is expected to play as an interior defensive end. With several defensive linemen set to leave Tennessee after this season—such as Omari Thomas, Bryson Eason, Omarr Norman-Lott, Dominic Bailey, and Elijah Simmons—Smith will have the opportunity to step into a new rotation in 2025. He may need to bulk up during the spring and summer to make a significant impact.
With Smith’s commitment, Tennessee now has 21 recruits for the 2025 class and is ranked sixth nationally according to 247Sports. The ranking could improve further as the Volunteers continue to target top prospects.
