Official Auburn News: Just In Another Top Talented SEC Superstar Chooses Auburn Tiger Football Over Alabama And FSU

Southside High wide receiver Derick Smith has switched his commitment from Alabama to Auburn, making the announcement on Monday night. Smith’s decision came after a visit to Auburn for Big Cat Weekend, where he was impressed enough to choose the Tigers over the Crimson Tide. Last season, Smith earned recognition as The Selma Times-Journal’s football player of the year and was named offensive MVP in 2022.

Ranked No. 51 in the Class of 2025 by the 247Sports Composite, Smith is projected to play as a receiver at Auburn, whereas Alabama had considered him for a defensive back role. Smith expressed his enthusiasm for Auburn, stating, “I just love the atmosphere at Auburn. It gets better and better every time I come. I ain’t gonna lie, I love the fans here.

 

I have great relationships with the coaches. It’s a good school. I like what they’re doing. I like what they’re building.”

Standing 6-foot-1, Smith had an impressive season, rushing 65 times for 1,036 yards and nine touchdowns, while also catching 46 passes for 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns. Additionally, he had 78 rushing attempts for 289 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Smith recorded 109 total tackles and an interception return for a touchdown. He is also set to participate in the All-American football game later this year.
