This offseason, the Las Vegas Raiders have been shockingly carefree about the cornerback position. Despite being regularly mentioned as one of the team’s top needs, they failed to sign a high-profile free agent or select one in the first round of the draft.
There hasn’t been a cornerback other than Jack Jones to solidify themselves as one of the outside starts since training camp began. The Raiders are now expected to sign free agent cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, according to Bleacher Report.
The B/R NFL Scouting Department stated in a July 31 editorial that “this is a signing that makes sense for all parties involved.”
“The Raiders’ roster includes some young, talented corners, but overall, things are still dicey. Nate Hobbs is a reliable slot player, while Jack Jones had a terrific run of play when he joined the squad in the middle of the season.
The Raiders can’t depend too much on how young players grow.
Following that, a lot will depend on how guys like Jakorian Bennett and rookies Decamerion Richardson and MJ Devonshire grow, according to B/R.
Adoree’ Jackson might help the Raiders relieve some of the young players’ load. With the New York Giants, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham helped the 28-year-old have one of his greatest seasons.
Fit for Adoree’ Jackson?
Jackson, who was most recently a member of the New York Giants, was a former first-round selection. When Patrick Graham was still the team’s defensive coordinator in 2021, he was a member of the squad. With Graham now a member of the Raiders, Jackson would make sense.
He ought to know the fundamentals of the defense at the very least. Jackson has been a team captain and has started 77 games over his career, yet he hasn’t always played up to his status as a top-20 selection pick. In a Raiders secondary that is still extremely young, that leadership would be ideal. There isn’t much danger involved because signing Jackson should require relatively little cash outlay. Jackson would be a reasonable option for the Raiders to consider if they’re not happy with what they’re seeing from their cornerbacks throughout training camp.
Is Jakorian Bennett Set to Begin?
The Raiders truly want to give Jakorian Bennett a starting role. He started the previous season as a starter, but his subpar play led to his benching. In the event that the Raiders don’t sign a veteran, he now appears destined to start again this season.
Bennett has all the makings of a very fine cornerback, but he frequently gets called for pass interference. He will probably be given another opportunity to start by the Raiders if he can demonstrate that he has progressed since his rookie campaign. He, for his part, is still optimistic.
Bennett told the reporters on July 29 that “I really ain’t trying to show anybody anything because my teammates know what I can do.” “They believe in me, they see the work I do, and they know who I am.”
Bennett’s preseason is going to be crucial. Even against backups, he needs to demonstrate that he can perform well in a competitive environment.
