**Miami Secures Local 2025 DL Recruit Donta Simpson from Maryland**
On Friday, Miami added another key player to its 2025 recruiting class by flipping defensive lineman Donta Simpson from Maryland. Simpson, a three-star recruit, had previously committed to the Terrapins.
The 6-foot-4, 295-pound senior from Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna has long been a Hurricanes fan, a sentiment shared with his family. Although he initially chose Maryland in June after multiple official visits, Miami re-engaged with him last week. Simpson attended Miami’s summer recruiting event and impressed coaches during a workout session.
**Impact of Simpson on Miami’s 2025 Class**
Simpson’s commitment marks the 20th addition to Miami’s 2025 class. He is the 766th overall prospect, 83rd defensive lineman, and 101st player from Chaminade-Madonna in this recruiting cycle. With Simpson on board, Miami’s 2025 class now includes 20 commitments.
Simpson joins three-star edge rusher Herbert Scroggins as the second defensive lineman in Miami’s 2025 class. He is ranked as the 17th commitment and the ninth defensive prospect for the Hurricanes, who now have nine defensive recruits for this cycle.
Simpson is the second recruit from Chaminade-Madonna for Miami, following four-star cornerback Chris Ewald. The Hurricanes also signed safety Zaquan Patterson and wide receiver Joshisa Trader from the same school in the 2024 class. Overall, Miami has secured four commitments from South Florida for 2025.
Over the past two seasons, Simpson has recorded 72 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks. With key transfers like Simeon Barrow, C.J. Clark, and Marley Cook entering their final college seasons in 2024, Miami is focusing on bolstering its defensive tackle depth.
Simpson committed to Miami following an offer extended last week, after visiting the campus twice in July. His commitment follows five others in July and came just a week after attending a Miami-hosted cookout. Simpson visited Miami again on Tuesday to watch practice and mentioned his longstanding interest in the Hurricanes. Miami’s defensive line coach, Jason Taylor, had the opportunity to work with Simpson during his recent visits. In June, Simpson also visited Florida Atlantic, Maryland, and West Virginia.
Currently, Miami holds the 10th spot in the 247Sports composite rankings and leads the ACC. The Hurricanes are on track to secure a third consecutive top-10 recruiting class, following the fourth-ranked 2024 class and seventh-ranked 2023 class.
