Jonathan Kuminga recently had the best season of his career, becoming a crucial part of the Golden State Warriors’ lineup. However, his current contract demands have sparked debate within the Warriors’ front office. Kuminga is reportedly seeking a max contract extension worth $224 million, a significant sum that raises the question: Is he truly worth it?
Last season, Kuminga averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting an impressive 52.9% from the field. His season began on a shaky note, with limited playing time and production. However, after a one-on-one conversation with head coach Steve Kerr, Kuminga’s role expanded, and he became a more consistent presence on the court. This turnaround led to what many consider a breakout season for the young forward.
By the end of the 2023-24 season, the Warriors’ front office was reportedly firm in their decision not to trade Kuminga. Alongside superstar Steph Curry, Kuminga was labeled as “untouchable,” indicating the high regard in which the team holds him.
Despite this, the question remains whether the Warriors are prepared to meet Kuminga’s hefty contract demands. If the team views the 21-year-old as a cornerstone for the future, particularly in a post-Curry era, they might be inclined to agree to his terms. However, to secure such a lucrative deal, Kuminga will need to continue delivering strong performances when the 2024-25 season begins in a few months. The upcoming season will be crucial in determining whether Kuminga’s value justifies the contract he’s seeking.
