Defensive end LT Overton, a former five-star recruit, transferred from Texas A&M to Alabama after two seasons with the Aggies. Overton, who was part of Texas A&M’s highly touted 2022 recruiting class, struggled to find a fit in their defensive scheme, starting only four games and recording just one sack. He felt that the role he was given, which required him to drop into coverage frequently, didn’t allow him to maximize his abilities.
Initially projected as a top-tier defensive line prospect with high NFL Draft potential, Overton said he had to lose more than 30 pounds at Texas A&M to fit the role the coaches envisioned for him. However, the lighter, leaner version of himself didn’t perform as expected, leading to his decision to enter the transfer portal shortly after Jimbo Fisher was fired as head coach.
Overton quickly committed to Alabama, joining the team for practices ahead of the Rose Bowl. He has since regained his weight, now tipping the scales at 284 pounds, which is ideal for the “Bandit” defensive end role in Kane Wommack’s defense. This position allows Overton to play with his hand in the dirt and shift between inside and outside alignments, making him a versatile threat against both the run and the pass.
Overton has spent much of the spring and fall camp as the second-team Bandit behind senior Jah-Marien Latham. Despite this, both players have earned praise from the coaching staff, with Overton showcasing his pass-rushing abilities in recent practices. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack highlighted Overton’s skill in reading offensive linemen and countering their movements, making him an effective rusher.
Overton has deep ties to Alabama, as his parents both worked for the university during his childhood. He attended high school in Alabama before transferring to Georgia, where he was initially ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the 2023 class before reclassifying to 2022. Although he considered both Alabama and Texas A&M coming out of high school, his relationship with Texas A&M’s late defensive ends coach, Terry Price, swayed his initial decision.
Now settled at Alabama, Overton has already begun to make an impact, with teammates and coaches expressing excitement for his future in Wommack’s defense.
