A day after being released by the Carolina Panthers, former UConn linebacker Jackson Mitchell was claimed off waivers by the Las Vegas Raiders.
Mitchell, a Ridgefield native and former UConn standout, had initially signed with the Panthers in May after going undrafted in the NFL Draft. During his brief time with Carolina, he recorded two tackles, one of them solo, in the team’s first preseason game, a 17-3 loss to the New England Patriots on August 8.
At 23 years old, Mitchell led UConn in tackles during his senior season, amassing 113 total tackles and averaging 9.4 per game, which ranked 19th in the FBS. He also contributed seven tackles for loss, one sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an interception. Mitchell finished his college career as the third-highest tackler in UConn’s history.
Now with the Raiders, Mitchell will aim to secure a spot on the team’s roster. The Raiders’ next preseason game is scheduled for Friday, August 23, against the San Francisco 49ers.
