Nic Petan has signed a one-year contract with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL for the 2024-25 season, according to a press release from the team. The 29-year-old forward was an AHL All-Star last season, playing for the Iowa Wild before being traded to the Hartford Wolf Pack. Across 59 games, he tallied 15 goals and 48 points, adding four more points in 10 playoff games. Petan also appeared in six NHL games with the Minnesota Wild, contributing two assists.
Drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round of the 2013 draft, Petan played 170 NHL games with the Jets, Wild, Vancouver Canucks, and Toronto Maple Leafs, accumulating seven goals and 35 points.
Despite being a highly skilled playmaker, he struggled to secure a consistent role in the NHL but excelled in the AHL. Over 296 AHL games with five different teams, Petan scored 95 goals and 194 assists, nearly achieving a point-per-game pace.
Petan’s earlier achievements include being the top scorer in the CHL for the 2012-13 season, winning the WHL championship, and earning gold medals with Team Canada at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the 2015 World Junior Championship.
