Breaking: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Officially Waived Another Top Star After Declining New Contract Offer

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers traded quarterback Dru Brown to the Ottawa Redblacks in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft, the team announced on Thursday. Brown had been one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the CFL this offseason, and speculation about his departure from Winnipeg was confirmed with this trade.

Winnipeg general manager Kyle Walters hinted earlier this month during the CFL winter meetings that Brown might not return to the team in 2024. He mentioned that Brown and his agent were likely seeking an opportunity where Brown could compete for a starting role, rather than focusing solely on financial offers.

Brown, 26, has served as the Bombers’ backup quarterback for the past three seasons and impressed in 2023. He started two games, throwing for 983 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception, setting a CFL record for the most touchdowns in a season without a pick. Over his three-year career, Brown has accumulated 1,484 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and only two interceptions, along with 113 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in 38 games.

With Brown’s departure, the Bombers may have more financial flexibility in free agency. The team has already signed quarterback Eric Barriere and wide receivers Cody Case and Tyler Adams. They also now have 10 picks in the upcoming draft.

For Brown, Ottawa offers a strong chance to become a starting quarterback, with six quarterbacks currently on the roster. Jeremiah Masoli, who restructured his contract for another season, is likely Brown’s main competition, with Dustin Crum and Nick Arbuckle also in the mix for starting or backup roles. Masoli’s health concerns could give Brown his first opportunity to be a full-time starter in the CFL.

Earlier in the week, the Redblacks added six more players, including four wide receivers and two defensive backs, and re-signed wide receiver Bralon Addison on Thursday.
