Breaking: New York Yankees Loose Another Top Veteran Star

**Yankees Place Luis Gil on IL with Minor Lower Back Strain**

The New York Yankees are optimistic about Luis Gil’s return as a starting pitcher after his stint on the injured list, though they are also considering using the rookie right-hander as a bullpen asset during the postseason.

Gil exited Tuesday’s 9-5, 12-inning loss to the Guardians due to a lower back strain, which led to his placement on the 15-day IL before Wednesday’s game. However, Yankees manager Aaron Boone downplayed the severity of the injury, describing it as “minor” and noting that Gil was already feeling better the following day. The team hopes he can stay active during his time on the IL and potentially return to pitching by around September 5.

Boone suggested that this time off could ultimately benefit Gil by preserving his strength for the final stretch of the season. “We don’t expect it to be long,” Boone added.

In a corresponding move, the Yankees called up right-hander Will Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Warren was available out of the bullpen for Wednesday’s game, especially after the Yankees’ relievers had to cover 27 outs following Gil’s early exit on Tuesday.

Gil struggled with his command during Tuesday’s start against Cleveland, issuing six walks, one short of his season high. He left the game in the fourth inning after allowing a home run and a walk, citing lower back tightness. “You’re a little worried when you come out of the game feeling something’s not right,” Gil said through an interpreter, but he emphasized the need to take things “day by day” and avoid making the injury worse.

Gil has been one of the American League’s standout rookies this season, posting a 12-6 record with a 3.39 ERA in 24 starts. He has struck out 144 batters while holding opponents to a .185 batting average. Having pitched a career-high 124 2/3 innings this year, some speculate that he might transition to a bullpen role as the season progresses or during the postseason.

Boone expressed confidence in Gil’s ability to contribute in any role. “When Luis Gil is on his game, buckle up, whether that’s as a starter or in a shorter burst,” Boone said, indicating that the team will monitor his progress closely and keep him active with bullpen sessions and possibly live batting practice. The injury does not appear to be serious, so the team is hopeful for a quick recovery.
