**Joey Votto Shares Emotional Message After Missing Toronto Blue Jays Roster**
Longtime Cincinnati Reds star Joey Votto announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Wednesday night, delivering a heartfelt message to Toronto Blue Jays fans.
Votto, who spent 17 successful seasons with the Reds—including winning the MVP Award in 2010 and earning six All-Star selections—had hoped to end his career with the Blue Jays. After signing with Toronto during spring training, Votto, a native of Ontario, Canada, was eager to play in front of his home country’s fans. Unfortunately, an ankle injury shortly after signing derailed his plans, and despite months of rehabilitation, he struggled to a .185 average during his rehab assignment (85 at-bats) and ultimately decided to retire.
In a conversation with reporters in the Reds’ batting tunnel, Votto expressed his disappointment, saying, “I’m not regretful, but I’m genuinely sad … I wanted to play a year in Toronto at home in front of family, in front of my country. To the Toronto fans, I desperately wanted to participate in games here,” as shared by Jays reporter Ben Nicholson-Smith on social media.
Votto’s fit with the Blue Jays was always uncertain due to the presence of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Justin Turner. However, with Turner being traded at the deadline, there was speculation that Votto might find a role at first base or as a designated hitter. Ultimately, it didn’t come to pass.
Fittingly, Votto announced his retirement during a series between the Blue Jays and Reds, a poignant end to his illustrious career. He is expected to be a strong candidate for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
