The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Alex Steeves to a one-year, two-way contract extension, as announced by the team. The contract is worth the league minimum of $775,000 at the NHL level, while Steeves will earn $300,000 if he plays in the AHL, according to PuckPedia.
Steeves originally joined the Maple Leafs in 2021 as an NCAA free agent from the University of Notre Dame, where he led his team with 32 points in 29 games. He made his NHL debut that same year and has spent the last three seasons primarily playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) within Toronto’s system.
This extension leaves Nick Robertson as the only remaining unsigned restricted free agent for the Leafs. Robertson has requested a trade due to limited top-line opportunities in Toronto’s deep forward lineup. However, no agreement has been reached to either re-sign or trade him, as his RFA rights are still with Toronto.
Steeves, 24, had an impressive 2023-24 season in the AHL, scoring 27 goals and adding 30 assists for a total of 57 points in 65 games with the Toronto Marlies. He also appeared in one NHL game with the Maple Leafs during the season, bringing his career NHL experience to seven games, in which he has recorded one assist.
