The Las Vegas Raiders have decided to release quarterback Nathan Peterman, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Peterman had joined the team two weeks ago to provide additional depth during the preseason. His arrival came as the Raiders sought to bolster their roster while giving other quarterbacks, like Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell, some rest during the exhibition games.
Peterman was given an opportunity to showcase his skills when he started in the Raiders’ final preseason game. During this game, he completed 12 out of 19 pass attempts, throwing for a total of 108 yards and securing one touchdown. Despite this solid performance, Peterman’s efforts were not enough to secure a spot on the Raiders’ 53-man roster for the upcoming season. The coaching staff ultimately decided that they would not keep him as part of their main roster, opting instead to rely on their current quarterback lineup.
Although Peterman was released from the main squad, there remains a possibility that he could still have a role with the team. The Raiders might consider keeping him on as a backup option on the practice squad, serving as an emergency third-string quarterback (QB3). This position would allow Peterman to remain involved with the team while providing additional depth at the quarterback position in case of injuries or other unforeseen circumstances throughout the season.
Peterman’s career has been a journey of ups and downs. Originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Peterman has struggled to establish himself as a consistent starting quarterback in the league. Known for his challenges during his time with the Bills, where he had multiple games with high interception counts, Peterman has since been viewed as a backup or a third-string option by various teams.
Since leaving Buffalo, Peterman has had stints with different teams, including the Raiders, where he has had previous experience on the practice squad. His familiarity with the Raiders’ system and coaching staff might work in his favor should the team decide to retain him in some capacity.
For now, the Raiders are focusing on their primary quarterbacks, Minshew and O’Connell, who are expected to lead the team into the regular season. Peterman’s future with the team remains uncertain, but his recent release highlights the ongoing roster adjustments teams make as they finalize their lineups for the new NFL season. If he does not return to the Raiders’ practice squad, Peterman could still find opportunities elsewhere in the league, where teams may seek additional depth or experience at the quarterback position.
