BREAKING: Arizona Diamondbacks Signing Another Top Experienced Star

The Arizona Diamondbacks are inking veteran infielder Luis Guillorme to a major league contract. This comes after they lost All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte to an ankle sprain.
Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase reported on Tuesday afternoon that infielder Luis Guillorme had signed a major league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Los Angeles Angels designated Guillorme for assignment on Friday, then on Sunday, he was released. The 29-year-old veteran was first acquired by the Angels from the Atlanta Braves in a transaction in which they agreed to deliver monetary considerations or a player to be named later in exchange.

Guillorme has already joined the Diamondbacks prior to their Tuesday night road game against the Miami Marlins, according to Álvarez-Montes.
Guillorme spent 2018–2023 with the New York Mets before his difficult 2024 season. During his six seasons with Queens, he averaged 56 games a year, hitting.261 with five home runs, 48 RBI, a.677 OPS, and 2.9 WAR.

This season, Guillorme has batted in 59 games.218 with six RBI, a.575 OPS, a -0.2 WAR, and no home homers.

Only two days have passed since All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte sprained his left ankle, which coincides with Guillorme’s arrival. Marte could not be able to play for the remainder of August after being placed on the 10-day injury list on Monday.
Monday, Kevin Newman took Marte’s place in the starting lineup and went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. As of right now, the season, he is batting.278 with a.688 OPS and 2.1 WAR.

Flame The other internal option to replace Marte was said to be Alexander. This season, Alexander has batted through 61 games.247 with a 0.0 WAR and a.664 OPS.

But this season, Newman and Alexander have spent more time at shortstop than second base, regularly filling in for Geraldo Perdomo, who suffered a torn meniscus in his right leg in April. Since then, the 2023 All-Star has returned to playing shortstop on a daily basis, batting.280 with a.703 OPS and 2.1 WAR.
Despite the fact that Perdomo is fully recovered and that both Newman and Alexander are employed by the Diamondbacks, the front office has chosen to include Guillorme in the mix. Though the above-average defender has mostly played second base in the Major League Baseball, Guillorme has experience at both shortstop and third base.

It’s unclear when Arizona plans to finalize the deal and activate the veteran infielder, as well as what countermoves they might make to create room for Guillorme.
