Breaking: Trade Pitch Has Rangers Adding $28 Million Forward for Former 2nd-Overall Pick

The New York Rangers are in their Stanley Cup window and are anticipated to make trades to strengthen their forward group during the season.

Users can design their own trades using the PuckGM tool on the website PuckPedia. One user suggested a trade in which the Rangers would re-acquire Andrew Copp from the Detroit Red Wings.
The Rangers acquire the more seasoned player in the proposed trade, while Detroit takes a chance on the former second-overall pick in exchange for a draft pick.

Copp’s $28.13 million, five-year contract is about to reach its third year. Added by New York during the trade deadline, the seasoned forward spent the 2021–22 season with the Rangers in 16 regular season games and 20 playoff games. Following the Rangers’ playoff elimination, he inked a five-year contract with the Red Wings.
Copp is a tenacious forward who might play center third for New York and provide some scoring support for the team’s bench. Copp participated in 79 games for the Red Wings during the previous season, tallying 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points.

Kakko, who was chosen second overall in the 2019 NHL draft, goes to Detroit. He has, meanwhile, found it difficult to play consistently in the NHL and has been linked to trades. However, Kakko is only 23 years old, and the former second-overall pick who has showed glimmers of being an impact NHL player would benefit from a change of scenery.
Kakko Is Angry About Her Rangers Role

During the Rangers’ 2018 regular season and playoff run, Kakko was occasionally a healthy scratch.

Despite being an RFA going into the off-season, he signed a one-year, $2.4 million contract deal with the organization. But Kakko let out his emotions at his involvement after the Rangers were ousted from the playoffs.
Playoffs were distinct, according to Kakko. Everyone wants to play, of course. Even though I (was) not in the starting lineup, I still wanted to win. I was hoping for the squad to win, to keep playing, and to eventually return to the starting lineup, but I must admit that I was not happy. It seems like every person in this room wants to play.

Kakko skated in 61 games in the previous season, scoring 19 points with 13 goals and 6 assists. In 15 games throughout the playoffs, he contributed 1 goal and 1 assist for the Rangers.
The Red Wings Wishing to Be a Playoff Group

Detroit went into the 2024–25 NHL season confident that it would make the playoffs after narrowly missing out on them the previous year.

Since the 2015–16 campaign, the Red Wings have not advanced to the postseason. However, Detroit has done a nice job of strengthening their young core this offseason.
“We’re in with that group of teams that can really contend for the postseason,” Yzerman declared. “We could make it if our players perform above your expectations, our goaltending is strong, and we stay healthy.” Alternatively, you could just miss the season’s last game by a single point. The thin line between all of it. When I compare this year’s roster to the one from previous year, there are several noticeable differences. In terms of duties, it might fit people a little bit better where they are on the squad right now.

In addition to re-signing forward Patrick Kane, Detroit added players like as Tyler Motte, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Cam Talbot this offseason.
