The main goal of the Oilers’ summer was to sign Draisaitl. Following a suspension for his involvement in the 2010 sexual assault claims against the Chicago Blackhawks, Bowman was restored by the league office and hired as general manager in late July.
With this new contract, which almost doubles his pay, Draisaitl tops Auston Matthews’ $13.25 million cap hit. The current contract that the 28-year-old Draisaitl signed in 2017 is worth an average of $8.5 million, making it one of the league’s most team-friendly agreements.
With 850 points in 719 regular-season games since making his NHL debut plus 108 points in 74 playoff games, the big forward from Cologne has shown to be worth every penny. With over 40 postseason games played, Draisaitl’s 1.46 points per game rank fourth all-time among players, behind only the great Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Jeremy McDavid.
