Latest Maple News: Just In Toronto Maple Leafs Superstar Rejects New Deal And Sign With European Team

Filip Zadina, the No. 6 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, has decided to continue his career in Europe, turning down an offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs. After being linked with multiple NHL teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, and particularly the Maple Leafs, Zadina surprised many by signing with HC Davos in Switzerland. The decision was announced via a video on HC Davos’ social media, and the club confirmed his signing on September 2 on X, stating, “HC Davos is pleased to announce the signing of Czech striker Filip Zadina.” He agreed to a two-year contract that will bolster the team’s offense for the upcoming season.

Toronto was reportedly one of the top contenders looking to acquire Zadina, viewing him as a valuable addition to their roster for the 2024-25 season due to his speed, skill, and potential to enhance their scoring depth. However, as talks with the Maple Leafs and other NHL teams were heating up, Zadina opted for a fresh start away from the NHL, choosing to join the Swiss league instead. At just 24 years old, this move is seen as a bold gamble, as Zadina aims to revitalize his career away from the intense scrutiny of the NHL. Despite being considered a player with significant potential, Zadina has struggled to live up to the expectations set for him in the NHL, most recently recording 13 goals and 10 assists in 72 games with the San Jose Sharks during the 2023-24 season.
