Latest NHL News: Detroit Red Wings Leading Toronto Maple Leafs In The Race To Land Top Experienced Winger

The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly preparing to compete with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one of the top remaining free agents, winger Max Pacioretty. According to Arthur Staple of *The Athletic*, the Red Wings have shown interest in the former All-Star, joining the Maple Leafs in the chase for his signature.

Recent reports suggest Toronto has already made an offer to Pacioretty, looking to fill a potential gap at left wing, with restricted free agent Nick Robertson still without a contract and having requested a trade. Toronto’s offer is reportedly a guaranteed contract rather than a tryout deal. While details of Detroit’s offer are unclear, it’s assumed that they would need to match Toronto’s terms for Pacioretty to consider joining them.

So far, neither Detroit nor Toronto has finalized a deal with the 35-year-old winger, and it’s uncertain whether any other teams are still in the race to sign him.

Pacioretty, a 2020 All-Star and 16-year NHL veteran, has had an extensive career, playing in 902 games with teams such as the Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, and Washington Capitals. During the 2023-24 season with Washington, Pacioretty recorded four goals, 19 assists, and 23 points in 47 games.

As both the Red Wings and Maple Leafs look to add experienced talent to their rosters, Pacioretty’s veteran presence and offensive abilities make him an appealing target.
