Breaking: San Diego Padres Hits With Major Injury Blow As Another Top Experienced Fans Favorite Star Suffer Season Ending Injury

Cosgrove Sent Back to Triple-A El Paso

On Wednesday, the San Diego Padres optioned left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove back to their Triple-A affiliate, El Paso. This move comes shortly after he was recalled to the Padres’ major league roster on Sunday. Despite his brief call-up, Cosgrove did not get a chance to pitch for the team before being sent back down.

Cosgrove has seen action in 18 games for the Padres throughout the 2024 season. In those appearances, he has struggled to find consistency, posting an elevated 11.66 ERA over 14.2 innings of work. Along with the high earned run average, Cosgrove has a 1.98 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched), reflecting his difficulty in keeping baserunners at bay. Despite these struggles, he has managed to record 15 strikeouts against six walks during his time on the mound.

This season’s difficulties have made it challenging for Cosgrove to establish himself as a reliable option out of the bullpen for San Diego. While his strikeout numbers are respectable, the high ERA and WHIP indicate issues with command and effectiveness, leaving room for improvement.

For now, Cosgrove will return to El Paso, where he will likely continue to work on refining his skills. Triple-A provides him the opportunity to regain confidence, sharpen his control, and make adjustments that could help him earn another chance at the major league level. Pitchers often go through periods of struggle, and the Padres may hope that some time in the minors will allow Cosgrove to develop the consistency needed to be a more effective reliever when called upon again.

Although his recent stint in the majors didn’t go as planned, Cosgrove has shown potential in the past, and with continued effort in the minors, he may still have the opportunity to make a positive impact for San Diego later in the season. His return to the Padres’ bullpen will depend on his ability to bounce back from his current struggles and prove he can handle the challenges of major league competition.
