The Winnipeg Jets have officially signed defenseman Simon Lundmark to a one-year, two-way contract extension. The 23-year-old Swedish player’s contract will see him earn $775,000 in the NHL or $90,000 in the AHL for the 2024-25 season. This move solidifies Lundmark’s role within the organization for at least another year, providing him with the opportunity to further prove himself as a valuable asset.
Lundmark was originally selected by the Jets in the second round, 51st overall, in the 2019 NHL Draft. The promising young defenseman has spent much of his time developing in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate. During the 2022-23 season, Lundmark skated in 63 games for the Moose, recording 14 points through two goals and 12 assists. His performance on the ice demonstrated a solid defensive skill set, along with the ability to contribute offensively when needed.
Although Lundmark has yet to secure a full-time roster spot in the NHL, the two-way nature of his new contract provides him the flexibility to continue developing in the AHL while remaining eligible for call-ups to the Jets. A two-way deal essentially means that a player can be shifted between the NHL and AHL without needing to clear waivers, which is ideal for young players who are still honing their skills and awaiting their breakthrough into the NHL.
Lundmark’s path to the NHL has followed a typical trajectory for many young defensemen, particularly those coming from overseas. Before coming to North America, Lundmark spent several seasons playing in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Linköping HC. His experience in Sweden’s top professional league helped to prepare him for the physical and fast-paced nature of North American hockey.
The Jets are likely keen on seeing how Lundmark continues to develop, especially with the franchise always looking to strengthen its blue line. With veterans like Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk leading Winnipeg’s defense, there’s a clear pathway for Lundmark to eventually step into a more permanent role if he can continue to elevate his game.
For Lundmark, this contract extension represents another step in his journey toward becoming a full-time NHL player. His growth over the next season will be critical to determining his long-term future with the Jets, and this year’s opportunity could be a pivotal one for the young defenseman.
