The Texas Rangers shut down right-hander Jon Gray and are likely to do the same with Tyler Mahle because of injuries.
In 2024, Jon Grey will have finished his career with the Texas Rangers. Tyler Mahle, a right-hander, is also probably done.
With a right foot injury, Grey was placed on the injured list. Gerson Garabito, a right-hander, was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to take Gray’s position. Mahle has been on the IL since August 20 due to stiffness in his right shoulder. Mahle has made three starts after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2023. Since making a comeback on August 6, he is 0-1 with a 4.97 ERA in 12 2/3 innings. This season, Grey has had a number of problems to cope with, including a right groin injury that put him on the injured list twice. After making 23 appearances, including 19 starts in 2024, Grey, 32, is 5-6 with a 4.47 ERA. Due to injuries, he has missed 33 games so far this season and will now miss the remaining 24 games.
He signed as a free agency in December 2021 and is currently in his third season with Texas. After spending three seasons with the Rangers, Grey is 21–21 with a 4.16 ERA in 76 appearances and 362 strikeouts in 387 1/3 innings. During the last three seasons, he has made the most starts of any Rangers pitcher with 72. Garabito, 29, has made 10 appearances (2024), including one start, and is 0-1 with a 2.65 ERA, 13 strikeouts, and 8 walks. Hitters facing him are batting just.158. Garabito has been with the team four times. When he threw four scoreless, hitless innings against the Twins on August 18, he was with the Rangers for the last time.
