The Miami Marlins designated left-handed pitcher Daxston Bermudez for assignment on Thursday, a decision that comes shortly after his brief stint with the big-league team. Bermudez had been called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday to provide bullpen depth, but his performance in two appearances did not go as hoped. Across three innings of work, Bermudez allowed four earned runs, striking out just one batter and walking two. These struggles prompted the Marlins to make a change on their 40-man roster, opening a spot for right-hander Jeff Lindgren, who has been selected from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.
Bermudez, 25, had been looking to establish himself at the major league level but struggled with command and consistency during his short stint. His first appearance came against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, where he allowed two earned runs on two hits in just one inning of work. Bermudez then followed that up with another tough outing, surrendering two more runs in two innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. The back-to-back rough performances left his ERA at 12.00 for the season, leading the Marlins to make the decision to remove him from their active roster.
Designating a player for assignment gives the Marlins time to either trade Bermudez, release him, or place him on outright waivers. Given his recent struggles and limited experience at the major league level, it’s likely that Bermudez will pass through waivers unclaimed, at which point he could be outrighted back to Triple-A Jacksonville. This would give him a chance to continue developing in the minors without taking up a spot on the Marlins’ 40-man roster.
In the meantime, Lindgren will join the Marlins’ bullpen after being selected to fill the vacated roster spot. Lindgren, a right-hander, has been a steady performer for Jacksonville this season, and the Marlins are hopeful he can bring more stability to their bullpen. At 27 years old, Lindgren has bounced between the minors and majors over the past few seasons, but he has shown flashes of potential at the Triple-A level, posting respectable numbers that earned him this latest call-up.
The Marlins, who are in the thick of a playoff race, are constantly evaluating their roster to find the right mix of players to help them down the stretch. With Bermudez struggling and Lindgren showing promise in the minors, the team decided to make the switch in hopes of fortifying their bullpen for the crucial games ahead.
