Breaking: Boston Bruins Officially Announced The Departure Of Another Top Experienced Favorite Superstar

Former Boston Bruins forward James van Riemsdyk has signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, bringing veteran experience to the Metropolitan Division team. Van Riemsdyk, often referred to as JVR, played a key role for the Bruins last season and was considered one of the top remaining free-agent forwards before his signing on Sunday.

Many were surprised it took so long for van Riemsdyk to find a new team, as he was viewed as a valuable addition for any contender seeking veteran leadership and depth for their bottom-six forwards. His experience and ability to produce made him an attractive option heading into the new season.

Van Riemsdyk had a productive 2023-24 season with the Bruins, playing 71 regular-season games and tallying 11 goals and 27 assists. He was particularly effective on the power play, positioning himself in front of the net. Throughout the season, he shifted up and down the lineup under coach Jim Montgomery, showcasing his versatility.

For Columbus, this is a savvy move by general manager Don Waddell. Van Riemsdyk’s ability to play multiple roles in the lineup could benefit the Blue Jackets, and if the team is out of playoff contention by the March 7 trade deadline, he could be traded for a draft pick, likely in the mid to late rounds.

Columbus becomes the latest stop in van Riemsdyk’s career, and some have speculated that he could have returned to the Bruins on a similar deal. With the Bruins needing to sign Jeremy Swayman, van Riemsdyk’s affordable contract might have been worth considering. There is also a possibility that Bruins GM Don Sweeney and Waddell could strike another trade, similar to last season’s deal that sent Andrew Peeke to Boston in exchange for Jakub Zboril.

Overall, van Riemsdyk’s signing adds veteran depth to the Blue Jackets and provides Columbus with flexibility as the season progresses.
