Done Deal: Just In Toronto Maple Leafs Officially Announced The Signing Of Two Experienced Superstar To Squad

Kyle Clifford has signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to Lance Hornby of *The Toronto Sun*. This deal secures Clifford for the AHL, but it means he won’t be eligible to play in the NHL unless the Maple Leafs offer him at least a two-way contract during the 2024-25 season.

Clifford, 32, brings a wealth of experience to the Marlies, having played in 753 NHL games throughout his career. In that time, he accumulated 66 goals, 144 points, and 905 penalty minutes. Known for his physicality and toughness on the ice, Clifford has made a name for himself as a reliable enforcer, contributing both offensively and defensively when called upon.

Last season with the Marlies, Clifford put up solid numbers, scoring 10 goals and 28 points in 53 regular-season games while amassing 140 penalty minutes. His performance was a key factor in the Marlies’ competitiveness, as he added grit and leadership to their lineup. While not as dominant offensively, his value lies in his veteran presence and ability to mentor younger players.

Though Clifford won’t be available to the Maple Leafs at the start of the season due to the terms of his current deal, it’s possible Toronto could call him up later if they feel the need to add depth or toughness to their lineup. For that to happen, the Leafs would have to sign him to a contract that allows him to play in the NHL, most likely a two-way deal that provides flexibility between leagues.

Clifford has had an extensive career in professional hockey, playing primarily as a grinder and role player in the NHL. He previously played for the Los Angeles Kings, winning two Stanley Cups with the team, as well as brief stints with the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs. His leadership and physical style of play have made him a valuable asset, especially in a depth role.

For now, Clifford’s focus will be on helping the Marlies in the upcoming season, where his experience and veteran status will likely make him a key player for the AHL squad. However, the possibility remains that he could find himself back in the NHL if circumstances align later in the season.
