The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Moritz Seider to a seven-year contract, with an average annual value of $8.55 million. Seider, 23, played all 82 games in the 2023-24 season, establishing himself as a key player for the team. He ranked among the top defensemen for the Red Wings, recording nine goals, 33 assists, and 42 points, while leading the team in hits (211), blocks (212), and average ice time (22:22). Remarkably, he became the only NHL player in 2023-24 to register over 200 hits and 200 blocks, setting franchise records in both categories.

Seider’s impressive career milestones in 2023-24 include reaching 100 career points and assists, as well as playing his 200th NHL game. In his previous season (2022-23), Seider matched his point total with 42 points and 40 penalty minutes, demonstrating consistency in his performance.

Since his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season, Seider has made a strong impact. He led all rookie defensemen that season in assists (43), points (50), power-play points (21), and average ice time (23:02). His stellar performance earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy, making him the sixth player in Red Wings history to win the award. Additionally, Seider earned All-Rookie Team honors and was the NHL’s Rookie of the Month in October 2021.

Selected sixth overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Seider has accumulated 134 points (21 goals, 113 assists) in 246 games, making him the leading scorer among defensemen in his draft class. Before joining the NHL, Seider was named the Swedish Hockey League’s Defenseman of the Year while playing for Rögle BK in 2020-21. He also spent time with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and began his professional career with Adler Mannheim in Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).

Internationally, Seider has represented Germany in several IIHF World Championships, winning a silver medal in 2023 and being named Best Defenseman in 2021. He has also captained Germany’s World Junior team and earned multiple accolades at the junior level.

Seider’s new contract solidifies his place as a cornerstone of the Red Wings’ defense for years to come.
