The Houston Astros are still in a strong position to contend for the 2025 World Series, despite an early exit from the playoffs in 2024 under new manager Joe Espada. After a first-round loss to the Detroit Tigers, the team faces significant decisions about its roster and payroll. General Manager Dana Brown has openly stated plans to cut spending and “balance” the team’s finances, which may limit aggressive free-agent moves. However, the Astros are still built to compete, and adding the right free agents could help them bounce back.
Several key players, like Alex Bregman and Justin Verlander, face uncertain futures, and Houston seems unlikely to spend big like it has in the past. Yet, the team’s core remains strong, and with Kyle Tucker likely to receive a long-term deal, the Astros may still make strategic moves. Here are three free agents who could help Houston get back to the World Series in 2025:
1. **Anthony Santander (RF)**
Santander, coming off a career-best season with the Baltimore Orioles, hit 44 home runs with 102 RBIs in 2024. While there are questions about whether he can maintain this level of production, his power and outfield depth would be valuable for the Astros. Pairing him with Yordan Alvarez in the lineup would boost Houston’s offense. However, Santander will command a significant salary, and the Astros might get outbid.
2. **Paul Goldschmidt (1B)**
The Astros struggled to find a consistent first baseman in 2024, and Paul Goldschmidt could fill that void. Though his numbers declined in 2024, he remains a potent hitter with a wealth of experience, including an MVP award and four Gold Gloves. At 37, Goldschmidt would likely be a short-term, affordable option who could strengthen Houston’s lineup for one more championship run.
3. **Blake Snell (SP)**
Snell was dominant in the second half of the 2024 season, finishing with a 1.44 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 56.1 innings.
