The Cincinnati Bengals have made roster changes ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, releasing defensive lineman as part of a shakeup. The Bengals’ defense has struggled through the first four weeks of the season, particularly on the defensive line, which has faced both performance and injury issues. Despite facing weaker teams like the Patriots, Commanders, and Panthers, the defense has struggled to maintain consistency.
Injuries have plagued the defensive line, with four defensive tackles missing time. Starter Sheldon Rankins is doubtful for Week 5, but B.J. Hill and reserve nose tackle McKinnley Jackson are expected to return. Additionally, 2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy is back after recovering from a preseason knee injury. With these key players returning, the Bengals’ defensive front gains much-needed reinforcement.
As a result of these roster adjustments, Carter was waived. He played 151 snaps in the first four games, accounting for 59% of Cincinnati’s defensive plays. While he showed effort on the field, his Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade was a modest 44.3. Carter’s hybrid role as a defensive end-tackle, along with his relatively light 290-pound frame, made him less effective, particularly against the run.
Cincinnati now has improved depth heading into their critical divisional game against the Ravens, who boast the league’s top offense, averaging 429.5 yards per game, including 220.3 rushing yards. To challenge Baltimore, the Bengals will need to contain the dynamic duo of quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Derrick Henry.
