Breaking: Just In Edmonton Oilers Officially Release Another Top Experienced Fans Favorite Superstar

The Edmonton Oilers decided to release Mike Hoffman from his professional tryout (PTO), despite his somewhat productive preseason performance. Hoffman played in four of the team’s first five preseason games, recording one goal and three assists for a total of four points. However, his output was not enough to convince the Oilers to keep him on the roster.

While Hoffman’s offensive contributions were noted, his overall performance raised concerns. He only managed four shots on goal and recorded a -2 rating, suggesting his best days may be behind him. Hoffman’s career +/- rating of -72 highlights his longstanding struggles in this aspect of the game. Last season, he had his least productive year since becoming a full-time NHL player, scoring just 10 goals and 23 points in 66 games, with a -21 rating, the second-worst of his career.

The Oilers, looking to build a roster with younger, faster, and tougher players, decided that Hoffman didn’t fit their current needs. Given his decline in performance and age (34), he wasn’t seen as an ideal match for the team’s goals.

The decision to offer Hoffman a PTO was likely driven by a desire to evaluate his veteran presence, potentially adding leadership from his 13 NHL seasons. The Oilers, with limited cap space, may have been considering signing him to a low-cost deal. Additionally, Hoffman’s presence could have filled a temporary need following Evander Kane’s surgery and absence. However, younger options like Raphael Lavoie and Matt Savoie were seen as better fits for the roster.

Ultimately, Hoffman’s release seems to be a case of the Oilers exploring all possibilities and leaving their options open. Hopefully, his preseason showing might lead another team to sign him, possibly as an emergency call-up from the AHL.
