The Cleveland Browns have bolstered their backfield depth by signing running back Gary Brightwell. This move comes as the team continues to navigate through injuries and find reliable options for the rest of the season.
Brightwell, a 6-foot-1, 218-pound running back, entered the NFL in 2021 after being selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the New York Giants. During his time in New York, he contributed both on offense and special teams. He made a name for himself with his versatility, excelling as a runner, receiver, and special teams player. While he didn’t have a large role in the Giants’ offensive scheme, his ability to contribute in various capacities made him a valuable asset.
In his rookie season, Brightwell played primarily on special teams, but he showcased his potential when given the chance to carry the ball. He finished his rookie campaign with limited carries, totaling 84 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Although his numbers were modest, Brightwell’s physicality and explosiveness caught the attention of coaches and teammates alike.
With the Browns, Brightwell will add much-needed depth to a running back unit that has been hit by injuries. The team’s star running back, Nick Chubb, suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier in the year, creating a void that the Browns have been working to fill. While Jerome Ford has stepped up as the lead back, the Browns are looking to strengthen their rotation with reliable depth pieces. Brightwell’s experience on special teams will also be a significant asset, as the Browns continue to prioritize players who can contribute in multiple phases of the game.
For Cleveland, this signing represents another effort to solidify their playoff aspirations in a highly competitive AFC North. Brightwell’s physical running style could mesh well with the Browns’ run-heavy offense, and his ability to catch passes out of the backfield gives the team an additional weapon in their arsenal. He may also provide some relief for Ford and Kareem Hunt, keeping them fresh for the latter part of the season.
While Brightwell’s role with the Browns is yet to be fully determined, he offers a low-risk, high-reward potential. His ability to adapt and contribute in various ways could make him a valuable part of Cleveland’s late-season push.
