On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders made two significant additions to their roster by signing offensive guard Marquis Hayes and defensive back Sheldrick Redwine. Both players bring much-needed depth to positions where the Commanders have been seeking reinforcements, adding experience and versatility as the team looks to solidify its lineup for the ongoing NFL season.
Marquis Hayes
Marquis Hayes, a 6-foot-5, 324-pound offensive guard, enters Washington with hopes of boosting the team’s offensive line. Originally a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, Hayes played college football at the University of Oklahoma, where he became known for his size, strength, and aggressive blocking style. During his college career, Hayes started 37 games, becoming a staple in the Sooners’ offense and protecting several high-profile quarterbacks, including Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray.
Although injuries slowed Hayes’ progress during his rookie season in Arizona, the Commanders see potential in his ability to contribute immediately. With several injuries and inconsistencies plaguing the offensive line, Hayes’ addition could provide a fresh boost. Known for his solid pass-blocking skills and ability to create running lanes, Hayes will compete for playing time and could help shore up the Commanders’ interior line, which has been underperforming in the early weeks of the season.
Sheldrick Redwine
On the defensive side, the Commanders added safety Sheldrick Redwine to their secondary. Redwine, a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2019, brings experience from multiple teams, including the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. The 6-foot-0, 196-pound safety played his college football at the University of Miami, where he was a key contributor in the Hurricanes’ defense and earned recognition for his coverage skills and ability to play both safety and cornerback positions.
Redwine has had a journeyman career in the NFL thus far, but he offers Washington valuable depth in the secondary. Known for his versatility, he can fill various roles, whether it’s playing as a traditional safety or dropping down into the slot to cover receivers. The Commanders’ defense, which has faced challenges in stopping big plays this season, will benefit from his experience and ability to contribute on special teams as well.
Building Depth
The addition of both Hayes and Redwine highlights the Commanders’ focus on improving their depth and addressing areas of concern. Injuries and underperformance have tested the team, and bringing in players with both potential and experience will help provide stability moving forward. Both Hayes and Redwine have opportunities to earn playing time and make an impact as the season progresses.
