The Atlanta Braves are expected to be active in free agency this offseason, following the conclusion of their 2024 season. With key players like Max Fried and A.J. Minter potentially leaving as free agents, the Braves will likely aim to strengthen their roster through both free agency and trades.
Among the players the Braves should target, shortstop Willy Adames stands out. Adames, who has had an impressive season with the Milwaukee Brewers, recorded 32 home runs, 112 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases, making him an ideal upgrade at a position where the Braves struggled offensively in 2024.
Another target for the Braves should be left-handed pitcher Tanner Scott. The All-Star reliever had an outstanding 2024 season, posting a 1.75 ERA, 22 saves, and a 9-6 record between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres.
Adding Scott would bolster Atlanta’s bullpen, giving them a reliable left-handed option.
Outfielder Anthony Santander is also a key target. Coming off a career year with the Baltimore Orioles, Santander hit 44 home runs and drove in 102 RBIs, both career highs. His power would provide an immediate boost to the Braves’ outfield.
However, the Braves should avoid signing Justin Verlander. At 42 years old, Verlander struggled in 2024 with a 5.48 ERA and a 5-6 record, showing signs of decline. Similarly, outfielder Cody Bellinger should not be a target. Bellinger, who hasn’t regained his MVP form from 2019, posted a solid but unspectacular 2024 season.
Finally, the Braves should avoid Ha-Seong Kim, a shortstop whose limited offensive production and recent injury history make him a less appealing option, especially with the difficult negotiations expected from his new representation.
