Houston Astros’ second baseman and team leader, Jose Altuve, is advocating for the return of third baseman , who is set to become a free agent. Recognizing his influence within the organization, Altuve is making it clear he wants Bregman to stay with the team beyond this season.
After the Astros’ AL Wild-Card series loss to the Detroit Tigers, Altuve took the chance to express his desire for the franchise to re-sign Bregman. “I don’t want to think about my last game with Breggy,” Altuve said. “I’m confident he’ll be our third baseman next year. We have to keep him. We won’t be the same team without him. I don’t believe this is his last game here.”
Bregman has been with the Astros for his entire major league career since debuting in 2016. Over the years, he has become a two-time All-Star and contributed to the team’s World Series victories in 2017 and 2022. He ranks sixth on the Astros’ all-time home run list with 191 and is ninth in RBIs with 663.
Altuve emphasized Bregman’s importance to the team, saying, “Since he arrived, the organization has improved in every way. He’s made us a better team. I hope there’s a strong chance for him to stay, and not just that, but to retire here.”
Bregman has expressed a desire to remain in Houston, but as one of the top free agents this winter, his future with the team will depend on whether the Astros present him with a significant contract offer.
