The Green Bay Packers have made a key addition to their roster by signing tight end John FitzPatrick from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad. FitzPatrick, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound prospect, is known for his physicality and blocking prowess. The move comes at a crucial time for the Packers, as they continue to evaluate their depth and make adjustments to their lineup in the middle of the season.
FitzPatrick was originally drafted by the Falcons in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Georgia, where he played an integral role in the Bulldogs’ offensive schemes, particularly as a blocking tight end. While not primarily used as a receiving threat during his college career, FitzPatrick still displayed reliable hands when called upon, finishing his Georgia career with 17 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown. His ability to contribute in both run-blocking and pass protection made him a valuable asset in the Falcons’ system, though he found himself primarily on the practice squad for much of his time in Atlanta.
For the Packers, FitzPatrick provides added depth at the tight end position, which has seen its share of uncertainty this season. The team has relied heavily on younger talent at the position, but with injuries and inconsistent performances affecting their offensive rhythm, adding a player with FitzPatrick’s skill set offers a potential boost, particularly in blocking schemes. The Packers have traditionally been a run-heavy team, and having a tight end like FitzPatrick, who excels in blocking, could help open up more opportunities for their running backs.
In addition to his blocking skills, FitzPatrick brings size and athleticism to Green Bay’s offense, which could be an asset in short-yardage and red-zone situations. While his receiving numbers are modest, his imposing frame makes him a potential target for Aaron Rodgers in situations where the Packers need a physical presence to gain tough yards or protect the quarterback.
This signing also speaks to the Packers’ continued efforts to improve their roster and adapt as the season progresses. By bringing in FitzPatrick, they are addressing an immediate need while also giving a young player the opportunity to develop in a new environment. If he can make an impact on special teams and in certain offensive packages, FitzPatrick could prove to be a valuable addition to Green Bay’s playoff push.
