The Detroit Lions have made two key additions to their practice squad by signing linebackers Cam Gill and Al-Quadin Muhammad. These signings bolster the depth of the Lions’ defensive unit as they push forward in the 2024 NFL season. Both players bring experience and versatility, which could prove valuable for the Lions as the season progresses.
Cam Gill, a former undrafted free agent out of Wagner College, has experience in the NFL, most notably with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl-winning roster in the 2020 season, where he contributed to special teams and situational pass-rushing duties. Despite his smaller stature for a linebacker (6’3″, 240 pounds), Gill has a high motor and a knack for getting after the quarterback, which has been his calling card throughout his brief NFL career. His addition to the Lions’ practice squad could give the team another pass-rushing option if injuries arise or if they seek a boost in certain defensive packages. With Gill’s experience in high-pressure situations and his proven ability to contribute in key moments, he brings valuable experience to Detroit’s squad.
Al-Quadin Muhammad, meanwhile, is a more seasoned veteran with a stronger track record of NFL play. A former sixth-round pick out of Miami, Muhammad has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and Chicago Bears. Known for his strength and physicality on the edge, Muhammad has accumulated 12 career sacks and over 150 tackles in his time in the league. His best season came in 2021 with the Colts, where he posted 48 tackles and six sacks, showcasing his ability to be a consistent contributor at the NFL level. Standing at 6’4″ and weighing 250 pounds, Muhammad brings a different profile to the Lions’ defense compared to Gill, offering versatility as both an outside linebacker and defensive end.
The addition of Gill and Muhammad provides the Lions with more options as they navigate injuries and seek to maintain competitiveness in the rugged NFC North. While both players are currently on the practice squad, their NFL experience means they could be called up to the active roster at any time, depending on the team’s needs. This depth could be crucial as the Lions continue their push for a playoff spot in the 2024 season.
