Breaking: Houston Astros Officially Part Way With Another Top Veteran Due To…

**Astros Parting Ways with Longtime Coach **

The Houston Astros are set to move on from veteran third base and outfield coach Gary Pettis after 10 seasons, according to a report by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. Pettis, whose contract expired at the end of the 2024 season, will not be returning for the 2025 campaign. He has not been formally fired, but his contract will not be renewed.

Pettis, 66, had an 11-year MLB playing career, primarily with the Angels. He also played for the Tigers, Rangers, and Padres. While not known for his offensive abilities, posting a .236/.332/.310 line in over 4,200 plate appearances, Pettis was a standout defender, winning five Gold Gloves as a center fielder. He also recorded 354 career stolen bases, tying him with Starling Marte for 106th in MLB history.

After retiring from playing, Pettis transitioned into coaching, working for the Angels, White Sox, Mets, and Rangers before joining the Astros in 2014. His time in Houston, spanning three general managers and three managers, was the longest stop in his coaching career. Given his experience, Pettis is likely to draw interest from other teams if he wishes to continue coaching.

For now, Pettis’ departure is the only confirmed change to the Astros’ coaching staff, but more changes could be forthcoming as the club has not yet finalized its 2025 staff. The 2024 season marked Joe Espada’s first year as Houston’s manager after serving as bench coach for six seasons. Espada retained the majority of Dusty Baker’s coaching staff, with Omar Lopez being promoted to bench coach and Dave Clark taking over as first base coach.
