Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian provided significant injury updates during his Monday press conference ahead of their game against No. 5 Georgia. Texas, ranked No. 1, dealt with key injuries following their Red River Rivalry win over No. 18 Oklahoma in Week 7. Redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers returned after being sidelined since Week 3, helping the Longhorns secure a 34-3 victory despite a slow offensive start. Texas showcased its depth and talent in the win, but also suffered injuries on both sides of the ball.
Three key players’ injury statuses are important heading into Week 8:
**Michael Kern, P**
Freshman punter Michael Kern didn’t play against Oklahoma due to a groin injury. Initially listed as questionable, he was later upgraded to probable but didn’t punt in the game. Ian Ratliff, a former walk-on, stepped in and performed well, with a key 50+ yard punt helping with field position. Kern’s injury will continue to be monitored.
**Isaiah Bond, WR**
Junior wide receiver Isaiah Bond sustained an ankle injury in the first half against Oklahoma but remained in the game briefly before being forced to exit after an awkward landing in the second quarter. Sarkisian stated Bond’s status is day-to-day, but he’s optimistic about his recovery. Bond, who has 21 catches for 369 yards and three touchdowns this season, is Texas’ leading receiver.
**Derek Williams Jr., S**
Sophomore safety Derek Williams Jr. is out for the rest of the season after an injury during the Red River game. He had been dealing with a hamstring injury and will undergo surgery. In four games this season, Williams recorded 11 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble. Fortunately, Williams is eligible for a redshirt, preserving an extra year of eligibility. Texas will now rely on players like Michael Taaffe, Andrew Mukuba, and Jelani McDonald to fill the void in the safety rotation.
These injuries could have a significant impact on Texas as they prepare for their top-five matchup against Georgia.
