On Tuesday night, the New York Knicks were hit by the worst aspects of the preseason.
In the Knicks’ penultimate preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets, Landry Shamet, who was expected to start on the team’s bench coming season, exited a subdued evening after appearing to sustain a shoulder injury. While attempting to stop a Moussa Diabate drive, Shamet’s right arm seemed to be at an unusual angle, and he clutched his right shoulder as he slumped to the ground in agony.
Thanks to The Strickland, you may watch the injury here (though viewer discretion is suggested).
Since the anticipated starters (OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Karl-Anthony Towns) were all rested on Tuesday, it was an opportunity for the Knicks’ reserves to show off their skills. Before leaving, Shamet scored eight points and pulled down two rebounds while playing in the improvised starting five.
Shamet does not yet have a contract, but it seemed like he was headed toward locking down a role in the Knicks’ rotation going forward. Shamet played 67 minutes in the Knicks’ first three preseason games after previously playing with Bridges and Cameron Payne in Phoenix. He scored 16 points in the team’s opening game against the Hornets on October 6.
“I base my decision on [Shamet’s] performance on the court, but I don’t have the last say on [the final roster spots].” According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau stated earlier this month, “He’s really done well.” He and Cam [Payne] have a great rapport, and they get along well when Deuce [McBride] is involved. You have a lot of speed when playing.
Shamet, 27, joined the Association as a first-round choice of Philadelphia in 2018 and will soon begin his eighth season. Shamet has represented Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and Washington in addition to Phoenix.
After three quarters, the Knicks had a 92-89 lead over Charlotte.
