Springboks newcomer Jan-Hendrik Wessels discussed the technical skills required to play both hooker and prop at the elite level, aiming to build on his impressive year with the Bulls as they face Scarlets this weekend.
Wessels has quickly advanced through South African rugby and into the Springboks squad, thanks to his unique ability to perform at a high level in multiple front-row positions.
The Bulls forward made his Test debut against Portugal as a loosehead prop, scoring a try in his first start, and has since played as hooker for the world champions.
Rassie Erasmus, known for valuing versatile players, has emphasized the importance of mastering both roles, a challenge few, like former captain John Smit, have managed. Wessels recognizes the need to focus on the specifics of each position.
“It’s an ongoing process, and I have to work hard to excel as both hooker and prop,” Wessels explained. “As a prop, my scrum work is crucial, and I must also engage in open play. As a hooker, I need to perform well in scrums and throw accurately at lineouts.”
The 23-year-old hopes to apply the lessons learned from the national camp to his performance with the Bulls. “I’ve gained a lot of knowledge during my time with the Boks, and I want to bring that to the Bulls when I have the opportunity,” he said.
