The New York Liberty shouldn’t have found themselves in this situation.
I’m not just referring to being tied 1-1 in the series, allowing the Minnesota Lynx a chance to eliminate them at home; we’ve discussed that in detail. The Liberty dominated the Lynx for nearly all of the first two games of the WNBA Finals, but those crucial five minutes made a significant difference, and not in their favor.
This was highlighted when Kayla McBride, coming off a screen, hit a deep three-pointer after New York again failed to defend at the screen level, prompting Sandy Brondello to call a timeout while they were down 60-50 late in the third quarter.
As anticipated, Minnesota came out strong at home, with McBride and Bridget Carleton making both open and contested shots.
