The Cleveland Browns have made two notable additions to their practice squad, signing wide receiver James Proche II and center Cameron Tom. These moves come as the team looks to bolster its depth and maintain flexibility heading into the middle of the season.
James Proche II brings a versatile skill set to the Browns’ wide receiver room. The 5-foot-11, 193-pound receiver was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Southern Methodist University (SMU). Proche carved out a niche for himself as a reliable slot receiver and special teams contributor during his time in Baltimore. Known for his strong hands and precise route running, Proche has accumulated 278 receiving yards across 25 receptions in his three years in the NFL. His best season came in 2021 when he played in 14 games, catching 16 passes for 202 yards.
Though Proche struggled to secure a consistent role in Baltimore’s crowded receiver corps, the Browns see potential in him to provide depth and possibly contribute on special teams. Proche’s ability as a punt returner adds another layer of value to the Browns, giving them a capable option in the return game if needed.
Meanwhile, the addition of center Cameron Tom adds experience and depth to the offensive line. Tom, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound lineman, has spent time with several teams throughout his career, most notably the New Orleans Saints. Originally signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2017, Tom has appeared in 13 career games, including one start. His ability to play multiple positions along the interior of the offensive line makes him a valuable addition to the Browns’ practice squad.
With injuries always a concern in the NFL, having a versatile and experienced offensive lineman like Tom available to step in is crucial for Cleveland’s offensive line stability. His presence provides an insurance policy should the Browns face injuries at the center or guard positions later in the season.
Both Proche and Tom bring solid experience to Cleveland’s practice squad, and while they may not be immediate starters, they could be called upon at any time to fill critical roles due to injuries or other roster adjustments. These signings reflect the Browns’ proactive approach to building depth and ensuring they have the necessary pieces in place to compete as the season progresses.
