Houston Astros second baseman and team leader Jose Altuve has voiced his strong desire for the organization to re-sign fan-favorite third baseman Alex Bregman, who is set to become a free agent. After the Astros’ loss to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card series, Altuve took the opportunity to publicly advocate for Bregman’s return.
“I don’t want to think about my last game with Breggy,” Altuve told reporters. “I’m confident he’ll be our third baseman next year. We have to keep him. The organization won’t be the same without him. In my mind, this isn’t his last game.”
Bregman, who debuted with the Astros in 2016, has spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the team. He has earned two All-Star selections and played a key role in Houston’s World Series victories in 2017 and 2022. Bregman ranks sixth in franchise history with 191 home runs and ninth in RBIs, with 663.
Altuve emphasized Bregman’s impact, stating, “Since the day he arrived, the whole organization moved in a better direction. He made this team significantly better. Hopefully, there’s a big chance he stays here and, even better, retires here.”
While Bregman has previously expressed his desire to remain in Houston, his upcoming free agency makes his future uncertain. Given his status as one of the top free agents this winter, the Astros would need to make a significant offer to secure his return.
Altuve’s public appeal underscores how crucial Bregman is to the team and its future, as both the organization and fans hope for a deal that keeps him in Houston.
