Auburn football received positive news on Thursday evening as Five-star wide receiver Sam Turner, previously committed to Georgia Tech, flipped his commitment to Auburn. Turner, ranked as the 70th wide receiver in the 2025 class and the 52nd recruit from Georgia, had initially committed to Georgia Tech in the early summer. However, after being offered by Auburn mid-summer and visiting the campus for Big Cat Weekend in July, Turner decided to switch his allegiance to the Tigers.
Auburn wide receivers coach Marcus Davis played a pivotal role in Turner’s decision, maintaining consistent communication and interest since the offer. Turner cited his faith and the influence of Auburn’s coaching staff as major factors in his decision. He specifically mentioned head coach Hugh Freeze’s emphasis on faith and player development, noting how Freeze has helped produce successful NFL receivers like Van Jefferson, DK Metcalf, and Elijah Moore. Turner believes Auburn is a great place for wide receiver development and looks forward to being part of the program.
In addition to the recruiting news, head coach Hugh Freeze shared updates on Auburn’s young secondary, a position group that had been a concern entering the 2024 season. With the loss of key players like Nehemiah Pritchett, DJ James, and Jaylin Simpson to the NFL, the team had to rely on inexperienced players to fill those roles.
At the halfway point of the season, several freshmen have emerged as standout performers in the secondary. Kaleb Harris has logged more snaps than anyone on the defense aside from senior captain Jerrin Thompson, earning praise from Freeze for his physicality. Jay Crawford has stepped into a starting role following an injury to Champ Anthony, and Kensley Louidor-Faustin saw increased playing time in Auburn’s recent game against Georgia.
Despite their inexperience, Freeze has been impressed with the young trio’s ability to rise to the occasion. He acknowledged that while they are still making some freshman mistakes, the experience they are gaining is invaluable for their development and for the future of the Auburn defense.
“They’re really talented kids and we’re looking forward to the future with them,” Freeze said, expressing optimism about the potential of Auburn’s young secondary.
