Done Deal: Just In Cleveland Browns Officially Announced The Signing Of Another Top Veteran QB

The Cleveland Browns are adding a new veteran quarterback as their depth at the position continues to face challenges for the second straight season. Deshaun Watson was carted off the field during a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. To make matters worse, backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson also left the game with an injury, leaving the Browns with Jameis Winston as their third-string quarterback.

There is no official word yet on when Thompson-Robinson might return, but the Browns are making moves to stabilize their quarterback situation. According to Tom Pelissero, the team has signed former New England Patriots quarterback Bailey Zappe. Zappe is expected to serve as Winston’s backup in their upcoming divisional matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, though this situation is far from ideal for Cleveland.

Earlier in the season, some Browns fans had called for Winston to get more playing time, but the coaching staff continued to place their trust in Watson to lead the team. Now, with Watson sidelined for the season, the Browns are left with no option but to rely on Winston, the former No. 1 overall draft pick.

Winston performed as the best Browns quarterback in Week 7, but the standard wasn’t very high given the team’s struggles. Known for his erratic play, Winston still possesses the physical traits and skill set to occasionally lead the team to victory. As one of the more capable backups in the league, he has the potential to step up in critical moments. However, Winston’s history of injury problems since leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remains a concern, especially if Thompson-Robinson is out for an extended period.

Beyond the quarterback injuries, the Browns are already looking ahead to the NFL Draft as they struggle through what has been one of the most disappointing seasons in the league. Despite some preseason expectations, the team has underperformed, and their quarterback issues have only added to their difficulties.

Bailey Zappe’s arrival brings some depth to a battered position group, but the Browns still face an uphill battle with a season that has not gone as planned.
