The Minnesota Vikings have made roster changes ahead of their next game, promoting rookie to the active roster while releasing veteran tight end Robert Tonyan. The Vikings are looking to bounce back from a loss to the Detroit Lions and are making moves to bolster their lineup.
T.J. Hockenson, the Vikings’ starting tight end, has yet to play this season but was close to returning last week against his former team, the Lions. With the release of Tonyan, it’s clear that the Vikings are preparing for Hockenson’s return. He has been sidelined since suffering an injury from a hit by Lions defensive back Kerby Joseph last season. Hockenson’s return will be a major boost for the Vikings’ offense, especially for quarterback Sam Darnold.
Bo Richter, who had an impressive preseason, was promoted to the active roster. While his short-term impact is uncertain, he has shown potential as a difference-maker on defense. However, the focus remains on Hockenson’s return, as he is expected to quickly become a key player for the Vikings’ offense.
Hockenson’s absence left the Vikings relying on blocking tight end Josh Oliver and backup Johnny Mundt, but neither has matched Hockenson’s Pro Bowl-caliber skills. Hockenson excels in all aspects of the tight end position—blocking, leading, and catching—and his return will elevate the Vikings’ offense to new heights.
Darnold, who has already developed chemistry with receivers like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, will now benefit from Hockenson’s abilities. As the Vikings aim to rebound from their first loss of the season, getting Hockenson back is a critical step, with Richter’s promotion adding depth to the roster.
